McDonalds will give its workers the option of moving from a zero hours contract to a fixed contract.

The fast food restaurant giant has over 115,000 workers in the UK – most of which are on zero hours contracts. Workers raised some concerns after being denied access to certain financial products, such as loans, mobile phone contracts and mortgages due to the flexible nature of their contracts.

McDonalds decided to launch a trial in 23 sites offering fixed hours contracts. They found that around 20% of workers wanted to move to fixed hours and 80% wanted to remain on their current flexible contract.

It has now decided it will offer workers the chance to work under a fixed term contract which offers a guaranteed number of minimum of hours each week. It will guarantee four, eight, 16 or 30 hours per week. This will be offered to 50 more sites before being rolled out across all sites during the year.
