Workplace Incidents | Prevention, Investigation and Post Accident Protocols

Workplace health and safety incidents can have profound consequences, affecting not only the physical and mental wellbeing of employees but also disrupting operations and incurring financial costs for organisations. Such incidents may also tarnish a company’s reputation and lead to legal ramifications.

As such, robust safety protocols and an effective response are essential.

Join WorkNest’s Health & Safety Regional Manager, Ian Watson, for an informative one-hour session, where you’ll learn more about proactive incident prevention and what steps to take in the aftermath of an incident in your workplace, from investigation and RIDDOR reporting requirements to dealing with the HSE and the importance of Legal Expenses Insurance (LEI).

Overview

Latest HSE figures show that in 2022/23:

  • 135 workers were killed in work-related accidents
  • 561,000 workers sustained a self-reported non-fatal injury in the workplace
  • 60,645 injuries to employees were also reported under RIDDOR
  • 3.7 million working days were lost to injuries, with each case resulting in an average of 6 days off work

These figures are higher than any employer would like to see, and while there have been large reductions in both fatal and non-fatal workplace injuries in recent decades, the current rate of injuries (1,750 per 100,000 workers) is similar to the 2018/19 pre-coronavirus level, suggesting a need for a renewed focus on incident prevention.

What's on the agenda?

Hosted by Health & Safety expert Ian Watson, this informative 60-minute session will help you to take a proactive approach to health and safety management, equipping you with strategies to prevent accidents before they come to fruition and protect your position should they occur.

Ian will offer some incredibly important advice on the following areas:

  • Ensuring compliance – Learn how to to ensure compliance with relevant regulations, industry standards, and best practices, including requirements set by regulatory bodies such as the HSE.
  • Incident prevention and mitigation – Prevention is always better than cure, especially when it comes to workplace safety. Learn how to identify potential areas for improvement and implement corrective actions to reduce the likelihood of incidents and injuries in your workplace.
  • Incident investigation  Taking the right actions post-accident can help to mitigate potential consequences and prevent recurrence. Learn what steps to take, including how to conduct a fair and thorough investigation, compile an incident report, and use this insight to improve safety practices.
  • Legal Expenses Insurance (LEI)  For many employers, a large fine will have a significant impact and in some instances can be crippling. Learn how LEI can bring peace of mind and offer financial protection in the event of a prosecution.
  • Dealing with the HSE  In the event of an incident, liaising with the HSE becomes essential. This can be daunting for businesses, but by adhering to regulatory guidelines and timelines, organisations can navigate the process seamlessly while minimising potential liabilities.
  • Reporting to RIDDOR – If certain parameters are met, some incidents require reporting under RIDDOR, but understanding the nuances can be particularly complex, often requiring specialist knowledge. Learn what the law requires so that you can limit further HSE involvement and investigation.
