How we help
What is a Health & Safety Consultant?
Health & Safety Consultants are experienced professionals who use their knowledge, skills and experience to:
- Promote a positive health and safety culture across an organisation;
- Develop solutions to health and safety problems;
- Ensure workplace risks are well controlled; and
- Ensure the organisation is compliant with all relevant safety standards.
Organisations may employ an in-house person to take on this role, or they may choose to outsource their health and safety needs to an external Health & Safety Consultant. Not all organisations will have the resource to manage health and safety internally; however, by law, all organisations must have access to competent persons to help them to meet the requirements of health and safety legislation.
As such, organisations across the UK are recognising the value of fixed-fee Health & Safety support, which gives you access to expertise whenever you need it, without worrying about hourly rates or the significant outlay involved in employing an in-house member of staff.

What are competent persons?
The law states that “Every employer shall, subject to paragraphs (6) and (7), appoint one or more competent persons to assist him in undertaking the measures he needs to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed upon him by or under the relevant statutory provisions and by Part II of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997.”
The meaning of competent persons can be found in Regulation 7 of The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
I’ve never needed a consultant before, why now?
Following the introduction of tougher sentencing guidelines in 2016, fines have increased 450%. Coupled with an increase in Fee for Intervention charges, the financial penalties for breaches of health and safety law mean that non-compliance can be significant. Aside from financial concerns, there’s also the risk of reputational damage, which may affect your ability to do business and recruit and retain staff.
Receiving qualified support from a Health & Safety Consultant will give you the reassurance that risk is fully assessed and will help to demonstrate to the regulator that you’re receiving assured advice from a competent source. Our Legal Expenses insurance also offers added financial protection.

What can a Health & Safety Consultant help me with?
At WorkNest, we always start by conducting an General Risk Assessment of your premises to identify any areas where you fall short of what’s required under health and safety legislation. From there, we will devise a Prioritised Action Plan, which will make clear what steps need to be taken to ensure your environment and working practices are safe and compliant.
Importantly, your Health & Safety Consultant will create a Health & Safety Policy for your business, which will act as a basis for effective health and safety management, and introduce you to our software, which will allow you to monitor your compliance day to day and take action where needed.
How do I know that I’m receiving good advice?
The key is to make sure that the person responsible for your compliance has recognised qualifications and proven experience of implementing effective health and safety systems. They should also have a genuine understanding of your business and how you operate, as this will allow them to offer practical solutions that work for you, rather than just recite legislation.
With WorkNest, because we appoint a named Health & Safety Consultant, you can be sure that your business is receiving the highest-quality advice from a competent professional who knows your business inside and out. What’s more, our advice is underpinned by local authority assurance, meaning that our processes, procedures and content have been reviewed, approved and signed off by an enforcing authority.
