Employment Law Essentials for Third Sector Employers

When you’re focused on your vision as a charity, managing performance, keeping up with regular changes in the law and dealing with time-consuming worker and volunteer issues can be an unwelcomed distraction. However, falling short in any of these areas can leave organisations open to scrutiny and the damage can be irreparable.

Join WorkNest for actionable advice and strategies for charities aimed at helping you manage day-to-day challenges such as sickness absence and performance, ensure your contracts are compliant, and stay ahead of the curve when it comes to new employment laws.

26 September, 2.00 pm - 3.00 pm

What's on the agenda?

As a third sector organisation, your employees and volunteers are your greatest asset, and keeping them motivated and productive is key to growing your charity and achieving your objectives.

Unfortunately, employee relations can be particularly challenging for charities due to the emotionally driven work and limited resources. High stress can lead to frequent sickness absences, and performance management can be equally tough, as addressing concerns risks demotivating passionate but sometimes inexperienced staff.

In addition to these people management challenges, charities must ensure they’ve adapted to the significant employment law changes introduced earlier this year, and prepare for more changes under the new Labour government.

Hosted by WorkNest’s Employment Law Adviser Darren Mulholland, this free one-hour session will explore the essential employment law topics relevant to third sector employers right now, including:

  • Employment law recap: Learn more about the key legislative changes introduced this April, including updates to flexible working, family friendly rights, carer’s leave and protection during redundancies.
  • Managing performance: Learn how to manage performance effectively, including how to differentiate between conduct and capability (the “skill vs will” analogy). Plus, discover the importance of following a fair process, considering reasonable adjustments, and completing and retaining accurate documentation.
  • Managing sickness-related absence: Gain insight into the common causes, what actions can and should be taken, the importance of completing and retaining accurate documentation, and your legal obligations when dealing with disability.
  • Contracts and contractual terms: Understand employers’ statutory obligations in relation to employment documentation including, employees’ right to receive a written statement of terms, and the importance of having robust employment documentation in place.
  • Looking ahead: Get a brief update on the new government’s plans for employment law, including proposals to expand day one employment rights (to include SSP, parental leave and unfair dismissal), banning of zero-hour contracts, and simplifying and removal of unnecessary restrictions when recognising and engaging with Trade Unions.
