Bracing for Brexit | Live business briefing

What changes can we expect to UK employment law, immigration rules and health and safety regulations when we leave the EU? Join our business briefing for a timely reminder of Brexit’s potential impact on employers in 2021.

17 December 2020 | 14:00 - 14:30

The Brexit transition period concludes on 31 December 2020. As politicians continue to negotiate, and with a deal yet to materialise, now is the time for employers to consider their workforce arrangements and how they may be affected by potential changes in just three weeks’ time.

A key factor for immediate consideration is the impact on any EU citizens in your workforce. The EU Settlement Scheme will continue to operate, enabling EU citizens already living in the UK to apply for settlement indefinitely. If a deal is secured, the deadline for EU citizens to apply for the scheme is likely to be 30 June 2021. However, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, the application deadline for the scheme could be as soon at 31 December 2020.

Following that, when free movement does end, the government plans to install a points-based immigration policy and minimum salary thresholds.

The government has indicated that after the transition period concludes, existing EU-based employment legislation and health and safety regulations will continue to apply in domestic law. However, one of the key reasons for Brexit was to “take back control”.

So which legislation and regulations are most likely to be reviewed as we settle into this new, independent world?

To help you think ahead, Ellis Whittam is hosting a live webinar, ‘Bracing for Brexit – What Businesses Need to Know’, which will brief employers on the situation so far and help you to understand and manage key considerations such as:

  • What does Brexit mean for employees who are EU nationals?
  • How can they be given useful and reassuring information on an inherently personal and uncertain topic?
  • What needs to happen so that they and their families can continue to live in the UK?
  • What about employing EU nationals in the future?
  • What are the health and safety implications of Brexit for employers? Will the law and your responsibilities change?

Join our Director of Legal Services, James Tamm, Director of Health & Safety Services, Nick Wilson, and special guest, immigration specialist and Employment Solicitor Samantha Mackie from Law At Work, on Thursday, 17 December at 14:00, as they dissect Brexit from an employer’s point of view.
