Being Health & Safety Compliant

The safe operation and management of a climbing wall is a complex process where statutory requirements and duty of care are of paramount importance.

With this in mind, The Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC) is teaming up with its valued partner, WorkNest, to deliver a free, informative webinar on the crucial topic of health and safety compliance. This 45-minute session will equip you with the essential knowledge you need to ensure that the highest standards of safety and operational procedures are practiced at member walls.

08 December at 14:00

Nobody wants to see somebody caused preventable harm, especially when they’re having fun at their local climbing wall. It is simply unacceptable, yet many incidents can be traced back to failings by wall staff.

Businesses must exercise reasonable care and have a duty to provide a safe environment; adequate information, instruction and training; feedback on performance for employees; safe gyms, equipment and machinery; and appropriate personal protective equipment.

All too often processes aren’t followed, which consequently leaves employers exposed to unforeseen costs, as well as civil claims, enforcement notices and, in the most serious cases, even criminal prosecution.

During this comprehensive webinar, we’ll help wall owners and their employees understand their obligations under health and safety law and share practical tips for protecting your business against a range of expensive pitfalls.

So, to ensure your wall is fully Health & Safety compliant, join Regional Health & Safety Manager and climbing enthusiast Oliver Williams as he walks you through:

  • Three compelling reasons to be health and safety compliant: moral, legal and financial
  • Balancing risk and reward: what do we mean by “reasonably practicable” safety measures?
  • “Suitable and sufficient” risk assessment: what does the law require and who’s responsible?
  • The hierarchy of controls: in what order should you apply workplace safety measures?
  • Safe areas: what are the main types of hazard within a climbing wall environment?

At the end of the session, Oliver will be taking your questions on the topics discussed. In recognition of the limited time we have available, we recommend submitting your specific queries in advance via the registration form. All questions submitted before or during the webinar will be answered in a helpful FAQ which we’ll share with all registrants after the session.
