At 11pm on 31 January 2020, the UK officially left the EU. Despite this, the country is still in a transition period which means that up until the end of 2020, current EU rules on trade and employment rights will continue to apply for businesses.
The government has indicated that after the transition period ceases, existing EU-based employment legislation will continue to apply in domestic law.
In the meantime, the EU Settlement Scheme continues to operate and will enable EU citizens already living in the UK to apply for settlement indefinitely. The deadline for applications is 30 June 2021. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the application deadline for the scheme is 31 December 2020.
When free movement does end, the government plans to install a points-based immigration policy and minimum salary thresholds.
As the deadline for negotiations looms, and with a deal yet to materialise, now is the time for employers to consider their workforce arrangements and how they may be affected by potential changes in the New Year.
To help you think ahead, Ellis Whittam is hosting a live webinar titled ‘Bracing for Brexit – What Businesses Need to Know’ which will brief employers on the situation so far and help you to understand and manage key considerations such as:
Join our Director of Legal Services, James Tamm, and our Director of Health & Safety Services, Nick Wilson, on Thursday, 17 December at 14:00, as they dissect Brexit from an employer’s point of view, both in terms of the employment law and health and safety ramifications in 2021 and beyond.
During the session, our expert hosts will also discuss: changes to immigration rules, migrant sponsors, visas and right to work checks, to ensure you leave feeling confident about what needs to be done to ensure a seamless switch from EU regulations to a revised set of UK rules.
